A supplemental budget in the Maine legislature to shore up a $118 million shortfall in Medicaid funding will not take effect immediately.

The House passed the budget on party lines last evening, which is far short of the two thirds majority needed to fast-track the measure.

The bill now goes to the Senate, where it’ll likely be passed by the Democratic majority, but it won’t take effect for 90 days.

Republicans wanted more savings in the budget, while Democrats are now worried low-income people will have a gap in their health care coverage.
