Maine lawmakers passed a bill that would require private companies to fund the cost of disposing of their packaging trash to improve the state’s recycling program.

According to the Portland Press Herald, if Gov. Janet Mills signs the bill into law, Maine will be one of the first states to have this type of program. A similar bill was passed in Oregon last week.

Supporters of the bill believe that it would push companies to use fewer wasteful products, but those who oppose the bill are worried that prices on goods will rise.
