AUGUSTA, Maine (AP)   Lawmakers and lobbyists are set to discuss how Maine could address prescription drug price gouging.

A working group of the Legislature’s judiciary committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday morning.

Lobbyists and other representatives of pharmaceutical researchers and manufacturers, health insurers, pharmaceutical distributors, retirees and consumer are weighing in on bills proposed by lawmakers.

One bill would require more disclosure of the costs of drug production, research, development, marketing and advertising, and allow the state’s attorney general to investigate violations of such provisions.

Another bill would prohibit manufacturers and wholesale distributors from price gouging in the sale of off-patent or generic drugs.

Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America argues that news headlines looking at drug pricing ignore the rebates and discounts that manufacturers provide.
