The federal Department of Education is giving Maine another ten days to comply with an order to ban transgender athletes from girls’ sports or lose millions in federal funding.

On Tuesday, state Republican leaders called on Gov. Janet Mills and Democratic leaders to take action to avoid losing $250 million in funding for Maine schools.

Gov. Janet Mills and state education leaders say they have no intention to comply with the president’s order banning transgender athletes from girls’ sports and are already following state and federal law as well as the Maine Human Rights Act.

Maine Republicans have proposed two bills two resolve the dispute.

One would make changes to the Maine Human Rights Act barring transgender athletes from girls’ sports, and another that would remove the term “gender identity” from the act.
