A man accused of causing a standoff with police in Aroostook County has been charged with attempted murder.

According to the Bangor Daily News, police responded to a home on Main St. in Stockholm Sunday evening. The homeowners told them 24-year-old Michael Baron had pointed a gun at them, tried to steal their car, and fired shots at their home.

Baron allegedly fired shots at officers when they arrived, with one returning fire but missing him.

A State Police tactical team was called in after Baron fled into the apartment building and barricaded himself on the second floor.

The standoff came to an end a little before 10 p.m. when Baron surrendered peacefully.

Baron is being held at Aroostook County Jail and was charged with attempted murder, aggravated reckless conduct, burglary and theft, with more charges expected.

The officer who fired the shot at Baron, Sergeant Nathan Chisholm, was placed on paid administrative leave while the attorney general’s office investigates the incident.
