Jurors in the trial of a Maine woman accused in the death of her daughter heard police recordings Tuesday of Sharon Carrillo admitting to severely beating the 10-year-old girl.

Carillo and her husband are accused of beating the girl, Marissa Kennedy, for months in their Stockton Springs home, eventually causing her death in 2018.

The Portland Press Herald reports Carillo is heard on the recordings saying “I didn’t mean to hurt her, to kill her.”

When police asked her why she did, Carillo responded by saying “I don’t know.”

The girl’s stepfather, Julio Carrillo, has already pleaded guilty to murder and is serving a 55-year prison sentence.
