Maine Police Unions Object to Disciplinary Proposal

Maine police unions say they’re alarmed over a proposal to give the state law enforcement certification board more disciniplinry authority.

The proposal would allow disciplinary action to include unethical conduct, sexual harassment, untruthfulness and behavior that undermines the public’s trust in law enforcement.

The Bangor Daily News reports the board currently can only take action against an officer for criminal conduct.

The police unions say the new rules would hold officers to vague, subjective standards and make it harder for departments to hire and retain people.

The Maine Criminal Justice Academy board of trustees oversees the certification of all Maine police and corrections officers.

The board will now review the comments from the unions and come up with responses during a meeting on Monday.
