WINDHAM, Maine (AP) An inmate in the state prison system has tested positive for the coronavirus for the first time, Maine’s Department of Corrections said.

The illness at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham prompted the testing of hundreds of inmates and employees.

Test results will guide further steps to prevent the spread of the virus, Corrections Commissioner Randall Liberty told the Portland Press Herald.

The inmate is identified as a man in his 20s who began showing symptoms Sunday and was transferred to an isolation unit.

There were more than 400 male inmates and about 60 female inmates at the Maine Correctional Center earlier this month. The Southern Maine Woman’s Reentry Center, also on the campus, had a population of about 80.

Two inmates at another prison are suing the Maine Department of Corrections for not granting them furloughs or providing them with other means to protect themselves.

In Maine, more than 70 people have died and more than 1,700 people have tested positive for the coronavirus.

For most people, the virus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness including pneumonia, or death. The vast majority recover.
