The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles is reminding residents about the upcoming REAL ID requirement that goes into effect on May 7, 2025.

The federal Transportation Security Administration will require domestic airline travelers to produce a federally recognized identity document in order to clear security screening at that time.

A Maine REAL ID driver license or ID Card will meet that requirement.

REAL ID, or a passport, will be required for anyone boarding a commercial airline flight, including at the Portland Jetport.

Maine has been offering REAL ID-complaint licenses since 2019. At the time, the deadline was Oct. 1, 2020. The requirement has been delayed several times over recent years.

Non-REAL ID-compliant credentials may be renewed online, but REAL ID-compliant licenses and IDs can only be obtained in person at one of the 13 Bureau of Motor Vehicles’ branches in the state. Mainers may schedule appointments ahead of time or use walk-in service.

REAL ID Requirements:

Real ID applicants must have their photograph taken and provide the following documentation:

  • One document that establishes identity, date of birth, and proof of U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residence, or other lawful status in the U.S.
That includes a U.S. passport or, a certified birth certificate as an official government-issued record of a person’s birth. Certified birth certificates are printed on security paper and include an official raised, embossed, impressed or multicolored seal.
  • Provide Social Security Number (card not required) or evidence of Social Security Number ineligibility.
  • Two documents to establish proof of residence in the State of Maine, such as a utility bill, paycheck stub or mortgage statement (P.O. Box is not acceptable).
