April saw Maine’s unemployment rate hit an all-time low at 2.4 percent and the number of jobs in the state is in the record numbers as well.
The State Department of Labor has been recording unemployment statistics since 1976, and this year has been setting records across the board. According to the Portland Press Herald, this is Maine’s fourth longest period of the unemployment rate being below 4 percent.
The State Department of Labor recorded 646,000 nonfarm payroll jobs seasonally adjusted in April, which is up by 800 from the month before.
At the start of the pandemic, Maine’s unemployment rate had reached an all-time high at 9.4 percent in May of 2020.
Nationwide, the U.S. Department of Labor has also recorded an unemployment rate of under 4 percent and reported an addition of 253,000 jobs to the job market.
