Gov. Janet Mills announces Maine’s first coronavirus-related death

Maine Gov. Janet Mills reported during a press conference Friday that the state has recorded it’s first coronavirus-related death.

Mills said the individual was a Cumberland County man in his 80’s.

“To the people of Maine, this news will no doubt worry many people who hear it,” Mills said. “I can’t say that we will not suffer more loses before this is over, but I know we will get through it as Mainers, looking each other and the world in the eye, together no matter the distance between us now and we do need to maintain that distance.”

Privacy laws prevent public health officials from releasing further details about the man.

Following Mills’ announcement, Maine CDC director Dr. Nirav Shah reported that the number of coronavirus cases in Maine had jumped to 168, an increase of 13 cases compared to the day before.
