LEWISTON, Maine (WGAN) A Maine school district may be exempt from a requirement to have students in school for at least 175 days per school year.

According to the Sun Journal, the Lewiston School District is asking the state to waive the requirement, as COVID-19 cases lead to absences among students and staff that make remote learning a challenge.

Superintendent Jake Langlais says remote learning does not work for most students, and says that if they don’t have the staff, they should “call it a day.”

Under current requirements, missed days will need to be made up in June, and the district’s calendar has already stretched into the third week in June.
