A math error by state officials will give Maine schools an extra $42.4 million in state aid with Portland, Lewiston and Bangor getting the largest shares.

According to the Bangor Daily News, the mistake was caused by a duplicate data entry that inflated a tax figure used to calculate funding allocations.

The error dates back to January and may affect the state budget that is set to pass on Thursday.

The budget will maintain the state’s obligation to pay 55 percent of basic K-12 education costs.
