Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows has released the reworded text of a controversial referendum question.

Mainers will be asked in November whether Central Maine Power and Versant Power shoud be replaced with a nonprofit utility called Pine Tree Power Company.

The referendum now reads, “Do you want to create a new power company governed by an elected board to acquire, and operate existing for-profit electricity transmission and distribution facilities in Maine?”

The term “quasi-governmental” was used in the original referendum question, but a superior court judge said the term could be misleading or confusing to voters.
