Maine’s Capitol Police has a new chief to replace the previous one, who stepped down after coming under scrutiny for posts on social media.

Maine’s Department of Public Safety said Friday that Matthew Clancy will be taking over as Capitol Police Chief. Clancy is a 35-year police veteran who’s previously led police departments in Massachusetts.

The position opened up with the departure of Russell Gauvin, who shared posts on social media raising questions about mask use during the pandemic and the results of the 2020 election. Those posts, originally uncovered by mainernews.com, led to a public outcry and calls for his resignation.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Gauvin retired in April and received severance pay.
