Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce was rescued after his kayak overturned on Lake Sebago in Standish on Wednesday.

Cumberland County Chief Deputy Naldo Gagnon says Joyce called for help after his kayak overturned around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Passerby and neighbors used a canoe to bring him back to shore.

Joyce was taken to Maine Medical Center as a precautionary measure and was treated for hypothermia-related symptoms. He told CBS 13 news Wednesday evening that he had been released and was doing okay.

The water temperature was about 48 degrees.

The Maine Warden Service is investigating the incident.
