Maine state officials are requesting a phased-in approach to a Real ID requirement that’s set to go into effect in a few days.

Starting May 7, Mainers will have to have a Real ID-compliant identification to board domestic flights or enter federal buildings.

On Thursday, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and a bipartisan group of lawmakers said they’re asking the federal government to phase in enforcement of the rule by issuing warnings to travelers who don’t have Real ID instead of disrupting travel.

According to the Portland Press Herald, a spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration said they still plan to enforce the rule on May 7.
