Maine Supreme Judicial Court justice is being sanctioned for failing to recuse herself from a major foreclosure case that posed a conflict of interest.

A state committee says Justice Catherine Connors violated Judicial Conduct by taking part in two cases which overturned recent rulings and weakened protections for homeowners struggling to make mortgage payments.

The Press Herald reports Connors is a former attorney, who represented a bank in a previous case against homeowners. It was a case involving Bank of America in which the court ruled against the bank, which stiffened requirements for banks to impose foreclosures.

Conners joined the Supreme Court after that case, which took place in 2017. The court then reversed that ruling with Connors and a mostly new bench more recently. A prominent foreclosure attorney filed a complaint against Connors in January.

The sanction does not mean Connors will face disciplinary action.
