PORTLAND, Maine (AP) Maine officials say the state has signed a three-year contract with a firm to track the growth and distribution of marijuana and marijuana products.

The Department of Administrative and Financial Services says the contract with Florida-based Franwell Inc. is valued at $150,000. The department says the agreement means Maine will be able to use Metrc, a software product that uses radio-frequency identification tags to track marijuana.

The department says the service is used in 12 other states, and it will be used in Maine’s existing medical marijuana program and eventually the recreational program, which is in development. Maine residents voted to legalize recreational marijuana in 2016 and the rules are still being developed.

The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission also uses Metrc.
