The current warmer weather in Maine is linked to recent severe weather in the south, which opened up the Gulf and brought in warmer air and moisture.

Accuweather meteorologist Jeff Nordeen says winds from the south have churned in. “We basically had the jet from the south, and that ushered in all this warmer air and actually very mild for this time of year,” said Nordeen.

He said Maine received seven-tenths of an inch of rain in the last day.

Meanwhile, colder weather will hit Miane after the New Year, with forecasters predicting temperatures averaging 3-4 degrees below normal for the first two or three weeks of January.

Nordeen says show is also on the way, but not immediately. “We’re not going to see much until we get to next weekend,” Nordeen said. “So, this upcoming weekend dry, next weekend is when we could see some measurable snow. We’re gonna have to keep an eye on how much, because the system right now is looking to output anywhere between three to six inches.”

Nordeen says there’ll be stretches of time when temperatures will stay in the low 20s in January.
