DIXFIELD, Maine (AP) – The police department in a Maine town is closing because the police chief resigned and because they do not have enough full-time officers.
The Rumford Falls Times reports the town board of Dixfield, Maine, voted on Monday for the Oxford County sheriff to replace the town’s police department. The town’s police chief has resigned because it was too difficult to recruit new officers.
Dixfield town manager Dustin Sarbuck says the town will lay off two other officers but cannot disband the department without a decision from voters. The Oxford county sheriff’s department previously took over policing in Dixfield for a month in 2016.
