WISCASSET, Maine (AP) Town officials say they rejected a settlement with the Maine Department of Transportation over a traffic project because Gov. Paul LePage changed a key agreement.
The Portland Press Herald reports the Wiscasset Select Board voted to reject the state’s proposal Tuesday night. Town attorney Peter Murray says LePage removed parking features and other details in the plan. Wiscasset sued the state in November, claiming the traffic project would harm the historic character of the downtown village.
Town officials say downtown businesses will suffer without Main Street parking. Murray says LePage refused to meet with the Select Board concerning the parking issue.
LePage spokeswoman Julie Rabinowitz declined to comment on the issue, citing pending litigation. A hearing on the case is scheduled for March in state Business and Consumer court.
