Maine Game Wardens are investigating a recreational boating death on Papoose Pond in Waterford on Saturday morning, which also drew a response from border patrol agents.

Game wardens say they were called to the pond at 8:42 am for an unresponsive person in the water, while border patrol also arrived on the scene.

One of three canoes on the water reportedly capsized, and wardens say an occupant of the overturned canoe told them he couldn’t remember what happened, but stated that two people from the other canoes brought the unresponsive person to shore.

They say 52-year-old Pedro Quizhpi of Ecuador died at the scene after efforts by emergency personnel failed revive him failed.

Wardens say the two people from the other canoes left the scene before they or Oxford County deputies and border patrol agents arrived.

Oxford County deputies reportedly put out a bulletin describing two  vehicles, and to contact them or Border Patrol if they are located.

One of the vehicles was reportedly stopped by Scarborough Police in Scarborough.

Game wardens say they interviewed the occupants and determined the men who witnessed the drowning were not in that particular vehicle but likely in the other vehicle. The other vehicle has not been located.

The Warden Service says it’s investigating the incident as a recreational boating fatality and it is not considered suspicious. The investigation remains open.

They say there were two personal flotation devices in the overturned canoe, but the occupants of the canoe were not wearing them.
