Mainers invited to drop off unwanted guns and ammunition

The Maine Gun Safety Coalition is hosting gun givebacks at multiple police departments throughout the state on Saturday.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the group is working with police departments in Falmouth, Cape Elizabeth, Kennebunk, Brunswick, Saco, Waterville, Yarmouth and Scarborough, as well as the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office in Bath. Mainers can drop off unwanted guns and ammunition at those locations.

The event, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is aimed at raising awareness of gun safety, but departments will accept unwanted guns and ammo any time.

The firearms and ammo will be turned into scrap metal. A Sweden-based nonprofit will then use the metal to make jewelry.
