A new report from the National Transportation Research Group – or TRIP – shows Maine’s roads are costing drivers more than $1,000 a year on average in repairs.
That report is based on federal and state Department of Transportation data and shows the average cost of repairs due to rough roads is even higher in Portland.
TRIP director of policy and research Rocky Moretti say funding is crucial to the maintenance of Maine’s roads and bridge.
“These bridges are absolutely vital to the functioning of our transportation system, and as they age the repairs necessary to keep them open become more costly,” said Moretti. “So, it’s critical that the state have the resources available to move forward with those conditions
CBS 13 News reports the study by TRIP shows about half of greater Portland’s locally and state-maintained roads are in fair or poor condition.
The report also found Mainers as a whole spend about $1.6 billion a year as a result of deteriorating roads and bridges.
