Maine’s apple growers yield worst harvest in over a decade

Maine apple growers are experiencing the worst harvest in over a decade after the fruit’s growing season was devastated by abnormal weather and temperatures.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Maine’s apple crop yield was down about 50% from historical averages this year.

Vice President of Crop Growers LLC, a crop insurance agency, said financial losses for most apple growers will exceed 50% because many of the apples that did survive Maine’s abnormal spring weather were then ruined by freak hailstorms in July and August.

Maine has 84 apple producers, many of which are family run.
