Maine is ablaze with potential record-breaking weather as temperatures reached as high as 80 degrees over the weekend, drastically higher than the average of 64.

It was 78 years ago today, that a record of 84 degrees was set in Portland. The record could be challenged Monday.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Heather Zeher reports that a large area of high pressure in the eastern part of the U.S is responsible for the current spike in temperature.

“We’ve also had low pressure, kind of blocking things up over the Atlantic and keeping this big ridge in place, said Zeher. So, with this high sitting in place, southwesterly flow aloft has been pumping a lot of warm air in our direction. ”

However, following this historic heat will be a return to more traditional fall weather, as Zehr also reported that a front of rain is expected to cool things off, with half an inch to arrive starting tomorrow and it will continue into Wednesday.

Zehr said that the upcoming showers are a welcome sight due to precipitation, and that air conditioners are ready to be unplugged for the year.

“I do think that we’re definitely going to stay on the cooler side, done with 80 degrees completely Zehr said. “Probably, yeah, I would say that I would feel safe taking my air conditioner out at this point.”
