AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Some major donors in Maine politics must now disclosure their top five biggest sources of funds under a new disclosure law.
The law applies to those who contribute over $100,000 to political campaigns influencing Maine ballot referendum campaigns.
Such donors must disclose whether they’ve received funds to influence ballot questions such as citizen referendums or direct initiative campaigns.
The donors must also reveal their five largest sources of funds beginning six months prior to their first contribution. That disclosure requirement doesn’t apply to funds that are restricted from being spent on a ballot campaign.
Donors must state whether they’re exempt from taxation, and reveal other states in which they’ve filed campaign finance reports.
Republican Gov. Paul LePage signed the bill into law Friday. Democratic Rep. Louis Luchini sponsored it.
