Skowhegan police removed numerous dogs and cats from a home on Wednesday.

The Portland Press Herald reports state animal welfare agents and police searched the home on Waterville Road as part of an animal abuse investigation. The animals inside the home were reportedly malnourished, and excrement was found on the floors and walls.

Police say 24-year-old Brett Plourde was arrested in connection with the investigation.
