Man accused in fatal Portland shooting behind bars

A man was arrested Saturday and charged in the shooting death of a Portland man earlier in the day.

Police announced Sunday that 36-year-old Abdirahman Mahmoud is now charged with murder in the shooting of 30-year-old Raoul Mapendo Tshiyuka.

Police responded early Saturday to reports of an injured man in the area of 263 Saint John Street. That’s where they located the victim, who died after being transported to Maine Medical Center.

After Mahmoud was identified as a person of interest, he contacted authorities and told them he was at 224 Ocean Avenue. That’s where he was taken into custody without incident.

He is being held without bail at Cumberland County Jail.
