Man Arrested After High Speed Chase

STANDISH, Maine (WGAN)  The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office says a Bridgton man has been arrested after a police chase.

Deputies say they tried to stop a pickup truck on Route 107 in Bridgton when it sped away.  Police stopped the chase as speeds picked up.

Police say the truck was seen further along Route 107 in Sebago later and again, police tried to pull the driver over.  Again, the driver sped off.

Police say they set up spike mats on Route 113 in Standish, which flattened three of the truck’s four tires, forcing the driver to surrender.

Police say 25-year-old George Sproul was then charged with eluding, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, driving to endanger, criminal speed and a probation revocation warrant.

Police say additional charges will be coming as the pickup truck was owned by the U-Haul in Auburn.  Police say Sproul rented the truck and never returned it.  Sproul tried to hide the fact the truck was a U-Haul rental by painting it black, including the U-Haul logo.

Sproul is being held without bail at Cumberland County Jail.
