Man Arrested After Standoff in Westbrook

WESTBROOK, Maine (WGAN)  A man is in custody after a standoff in Westbrook Tuesday.

Police say around 2 p.m. yesterday, they responded to 34 Lamb St for a domestic assault in progress.  The female victim reported the suspect, later identified by police as 32-year-old Brandon Conley, had assaulted her, then threatened suicide with a handgun he had on him.

Police say initial officers on scene brought the victim and her infant child to safety then set up a perimeter around the apartment.  Other apartments were evacuated, as were other nearby residences.

Police called in the Cumberland County Emergency Services Unit and tried to make contact with Conley.  Eventually, officers were able to connect with Conley on a cell phone.

Police say he had fled the house seconds before the initial officers’ arrival and after several hours, negotiated his surrender to officers at the Westbrook Public Safety Building.

Conley did not have the handgun with him during his surrender, but police say they were able to determine who Conley gave it to and retrieved it.
