A 32-year-old homeless man faces more than a dozen gun related charges after police say he recklessly fired a semi-automatic handgun in a Kennebec County town Tuesday.

Maine State Police say Joseph Costa was walking down Unity Road in Benton at around 11:30 am when he fired numerous shots, including at homes, with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.

State Police say they located and arrested Costa without incident, and no one was injured in the gunfire.

They say he was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. He was later taken to the Kennebec County Jail and charged with 12 counts of aggravated reckless conduct with a firearm and one count of discharging a firearm near a dwelling.

Costa was denied bail and is awaiting his first court appearance.

State Police say the investigation remains ongoing and anyone who witnessed the incident or has additional information is encouraged to contact the Maine State Police at 207-624-7076 or email Trooper Tyler Nadeau.
