The Maine Dept. of Public Safety says a 68-year-old man is dead after he set himself on fire outside a convenience store in Poland, Maine.

The Poland Fire Dept. contacted the State Fire Marshal’s Office Tuesday at about 1 a.m., asking them to respond to a fire at the Big Apple store on Maine Street.

Investigators say the man pulled up next to a gas pump, poured gasoline on himself and then walked a short distance away from the pumps before setting himself on fire.

An employee of the store ran outside and extinguished the flames, but the victim died as a result of his injuries.

The public safety dept. said the identity of the man would not be immediately released, pending notification of his family.

There were no other injuries, and no property damage was reported as a result of the fire.
