Police say a New York man died when his car crashed into a grocery store in Waldo County, causing the vehicle to burst into flames.

The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office says 23-year-old Andrew McHugh went off the road and crashed into Swan Lake Grocery along Route 141 in Swanville around 11:50 Tuesday night.

McHugh, who was the only person in the vehicle, died at the scene after attempts to pull him out of the vehicle failed.

There was significant water, fire and smoke damage to the store.

Police say speed appears to be a factor in the crash, which is still under investigation.
