PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (AP) Police shot a 25-year-old man in a confrontation after announcing a search for a man considered armed and dangerous, officials said Monday.

There was a heavy police presence Sunday evening along Main Street in Presque Isle, and smoke was seen coming from the building.

Police said Jacob Poitraw of Presque Isle had allegedly threatened two people with an assault-style rifle after a road rage incident in Presque Isle, then led police on a chase and rammed a police cruiser multiple times. He was then shot by an officer and died at a local hospital.

Sgt. Tyler Cote was placed on paid administrative leave while the Attorney General’s Office investigates, which is standard for all police-involved shootings in Maine.
