BIDDEFORD, Maine (AP)   A former mill complex in a southern Maine city plans to become the site of the largest privately-held solar energy project in the state.

The project is slated for Pepperell Mill in Biddeford. The Portland Press Herald reports ReVision Energy is contracting to do the work.

Independent Sen. Angus King’s office says the solar array is expected to produce more than enough electricity to meet the needs of the mill campus’s residential units, which are already in place. King’s expected to tour the campus on Friday.

King says the project includes 1,200 solar panels on the roof of the building.

The mill’s owner, Doug Sanford, and his company have invested more than $40 million in the mills since 2004. The 16-acre campus is more than two-thirds complete.
