PORTLAND, Maine (AP) A woman who was convicted of murdering her 10-year-old daughter has appealed to Maine’s highest court to request a new trial claiming that she was the victim of abuse by her former husband.

The Bangor Daily News reported Thursday that attorneys for Sharon Kennedy also argued in the appeal to Maine’s Supreme Judicial Court that her confession that she killed her daughter Marissa should have been suppressed at trial.

Kennedy’s former husband was also convicted in the murder.

The child’s death was one of two that exposed gaps in Maine’s child welfare system and led to reforms.

Justices will hear Kennedy’s appeal Tuesday.
