Prohibition on offshore wind projects in state waters signed into law by Gov. Mills

Governor Janet Mills on Wednesday signed a bill into law that will block the creation of new offshore wind power projects in state waters.

The governor’s office says the bill is aimed at protecting state waters and preserving them for recreation and fishing.

In a statement, Mills said “I applaud the Legislature’s strong bipartisan support of this bill, which I believe demonstrates that offshore wind and Maine’s fishing industry can not only can coexist but can help us build a stronger economy with more good-paying jobs and a brighter, more sustainable future for Maine people.”

Last month, Mills signed another bill into law that will bring the state one step closer to having the country’s first research area for floating offshore wind in federal waters in the gulf of Maine.
