The driver and passenger involved in a motorcycle accident on I-95 in Maine on Monday afternoon have been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Maine Department of Public Safety Public Information Officer Shannon Moss says the crash happened around 1:50 p.m. on I-95 near mile 114 in Augusta.

She says the male driver, later identified as 40-year-old Patrick Daggett of New Sharon and a female passenger, 42-year-old Rebecca Wallace of Jay, were not wearing helmets.

Officials believe the accident was caused by a mechanical malfunction. They said Daggett tried to pull the motorcycle over into the breakdown lane, but lost control and went off the roadway, causing both of them to be ejected.

Both were LifeFlighted to Portland.
