Maine’s speaker of the house is pushing a bill that could help meet the state’s housing goal.

Democrat Ryan Fecteau’s bill would sustainably fund housing in the state.

A moderate increase in the real estate transfer tax for homes that exceed a million dollars is what it would accomplish.

It would also remove the real estate transfer tax for those who buy and sell when transactions involve first-time homebuyers who are qualified through Maine Housing.

CBS 13 reports that in 2023 a report found that Maine would need to create at least 84,000 new homes to meet demand by 2030.
