Investigators say overloaded furnace led to deadly explosion in New Gloucester

Fire investigators have determined the cause of a deadly explosion at a home in New Gloucester over the weekend.

The Maine Fire Marshal’s office was called to investigate the blast at the home on Route 231, or Intervale Road, on Saturday afternoon. The homeowner, 44-year-old Lado Lodoka, was killed in the explosion. A family member who was inside got out safely.

On Monday, investigators said a steam explosion caused by thermal runaway resulted in the blast. Lodoka was working on the home’s furnace, which was an oil-fired burner, when it became overloaded with fuel. Investigators believe it started to burn and didn’t stop, causing pressure to build up and leading to an explosion.
