BANGOR, Maine (AP)   Court documents indicate two homeless people in Maine were alive before a man allegedly set fire to a box truck in which they were sleeping.

The affidavit filed Tuesday indicates John De St. Croix, of Bangor, told police he saw a man he was angry with passed out in the back of a box truck. He said he closed the door and used cardboard, Styrofoam and other materials to start the fire.

The victims, 43-year-old Michael Bridges and 36-year-old Desiree York, were recovered after firefighter extinguished the blaze on March 28.

The Bangor Daily News reports that De St. Croix, who’s charged with murder, told investigators he thought Bridges was alone and tried to help when he heard a woman’s screams. His lawyer didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.
