Mainers submitted about 5,600 new jobless claims last week. Meanwhile, labor officials have rejected thousands of claims suspected of being fraudulent.

The Maine Department of Labor says about 2,900 were for traditional state benefits, while another 2,700 were for benefits under the federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program.

The total number of initial claims filed dipped slightly from 5,900 the previous week.

Labor officials also said the department canceled about 6,200 initial claims and weekly certifications last week because they were suspected of being fraudulent.

Between the week ending May 30 and the week ending June 20, the department says it has canceled about 23,900 initial claims and 41,000 weekly certifications.
