AUGUSTA, Maine (WGME) The state of Maine could allow parents to select non-binary as a gender option on their children’s birth certificates.

Maine’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention is considering the proposal, according to CBS 13. It would allow parents to select non-binary for their child at birth, and for a person to receive a new birth certificate with a different first and middle name with the non-binary marker selected without a court order. The CDC says parental consent and a medical provider’s signature may be required in certain cases.

A public hearing will be held March 9th at 2 p.m. at the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry in Augusta.
