According to the Portland Press Herald, the Maine Legislature is moving forward with a proposal to modify the child endangerment law to include leaving a loaded firearm where a child could access it.

The proposal was made by Democratic Rep. Vicki Doudera of Camden. Currently, the law only covers that a person can be convicted if they knowingly sell, furnish, or give away items like liquor, tobacco, and ammunition to those 16 and younger.

27 states already have laws similar to this in place. The Maine chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and some members of law enforcement are in support of the proposal.
