A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Monday to celebrate the opening of the Maine Audubon’s new trail at Gilsland Farm in Falmouth.
The Maine Audubon says the new All-Persons trail is one of only a few wheelchair-accessible trails allowing visitors into a wildlife sanctuary in Greater Portland.
Maine Audubon President Judy Camuso said:
“This project is a really great example of Maine Audubon’s commitment to being inclusive and to making sure that nature is available for everyone. My personal goal in life is to get more people outside and get them connected to nature, and then hopefully they will make that connection and take action in their lives and do things to help protect fish, wildlife, and the natural environments that we all enjoy and are so passionate about.”
The 2,265-foot-long trail begins at the sanctuary’s visitor center and winds through forested areas.
It includes a wooden boardwalk to remove obstacles typically encountered on wildlife trails.
The trail also includes interpretive signs to give visitors information about wildlife and their habitats, along with audio descriptions and tactile signs.
The trail was developed with the help of the Bureau of Parks and Lands through the Federal Highway Administration Recreational Trails Program.
