Newport Woman Escapes Serious Injury After Her Vehicle Overturns on Bridge

WATERVILLE, Maine (WGAN) A Newport woman suffered minor injuries after her vehicle overturned on I-95 in Waterville on Thursday.

Maine State Police say 49-year-old Melissa Ames of Newport lost control of her vehicle on the Messalonskee Stream Bridge on Thursday morning while passing in the northbound lanes. Her car struck abutments on both sides before overturning and coming to rest in the middle of the bridge. Police say rain that fell on the bridge had frozen, causing slippery conditions.

Ames suffered minor lacerations and was looked at by ambulance personnel at the scene.

Traffic was backed up in the northbound lanes to Kennedy Memorial Drive in Waterville while crews responded to the scene.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

State police remind motorists that, even with above freezing air temperatures, bridge surfaces tend to be the first to freeze and motorists should adjust their speed accordingly.
