Maine Journalism Foundation, a new nonprofit organization, is looking for donations to purchase Masthead Maine, the state’s largest network of independent news and media outlets.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the current owner, Reade Brower, announced earlier this month that he was considering selling Masthead Maine and its five daily and 25 weekly newspapers.

Among those newspapers is the Portland Press Herald and the Sun Journal.

The president of the MaineJF, Bill Nemitz, wrote in the Portland Press Herald’s column today asking for donations to make the purchase a reality.

The nonprofit is looking to raise at least $15 million in donations.

Nemitz says the MaineJF is dedicated to preserving local journalism and hopes to prevent a corporate entity from acquiring Maine Masthead.

With Maine Masthead, Nemitz says MaineJF aims to enhance journalism across Maine and support other media colleagues.
