November Maine Ballot Measure Seeks $30 Mil. for Trails

Maine voters will decide whether a $30 million bond will be used to maintain, expand and improve recreational trails around the state.

The latest Pan Atlantic Poll shows 51 percent support for the bond, which is the first of its kind in the state.

The Press Herald reports advocates say it’s an historic opportunity and is needed to boost the rural economy and repair damage to trails from storms last winter.

There’s no formal opposition to what’s known as Question 4, which will be on the November ballot.

Money from the bond would be awarded by the Bureau of Parks and Lands through a competitive grant process.

Municipalities, qualified divisions of state government and nonprofits would be eligible to apply.

A breakdown of the Pan Atlantic Poll on Question 4 is below:

— Half of respondents (51%) indicated that
they intend to vote “Yes” on this question.

— 30% of respondents indicated that they
intend to vote “No,” while 19% are
“Undecided” on this question.

— 57% of Democrats, 49% of Independents,
and 47% of Republicans indicated support
for this question
